The Word in the Beginning and God
Main reference: Jn 1:1-5, Jn 10:35
The word in the beginning was God. All things were made through the word, and nothing was made that has been made without the word. In the word was the light of life. This light of life shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. How do the light and the darkness differ?
The darkness is referred to as a person who is at a place where there is no word, which means there is no life. In an old Korean tale, there is a phrase which means the ghosts are aroused in a dark place. Just by saying that you believe in God, you can neither enter into the kingdom of heaven nor become the children of God. You can go to the kingdom of heaven where God dwells only when you are born with the seed of the word, which is God’s light.
As written in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, there are people of the night and the darkness, and people of the light and the day. It is called the day and the light where there is the word, which is the light of life, and it is called the night and the darkness where there is no word. Those people who persecute have no word in them and have no understanding, so they persecute others today as was also done in the past.
The word in the beginning is God. It has the power of creation, and it is life and light. This word is the seed that makes people become the sons of God, and it is God’s spirit, that is, the Holy Spirit. This word is our guide, teacher, and the way to heaven. Jesus, who was born through the word, in who the word became flesh, also said that he was the word in the beginning. Therefore, we must also be born with the seed of the word and become the light and the word.
